It’s That Time Again: National Adoption Awareness Month – Day One. Reading Adoption

Welcome to National Adoption Awareness Month 2010! I’m sure you’ve been as eagerly awaiting the November lollipops and roses, cotton candy and angel wings, and back patting, and pious press clips celebration as much as the Bad Kitties and I have. This year’s emphasis, we’re told, is on “adoption of children currently in foster care.” Bastardette may (or may not) write about the theme, but if I don’t somebody else will. We all know the code. Interestingly, what seems to be the official NAAM page (Mardie Cardwell’s Lifetime Adoptions over-linked page linked above), celebrates newborn relinquishment and includes a queasy video of happy “birth mothers” (one a 2fer adoptee/mom) and adoptive parents grateful for the gifts of other people’s children God has bestowed on them. There is also a crash course in “positive adoption language.” All is moderated by wide-eyed Cardwell. There’s more I could say about this, but I don’t want to encourage her. We’ve always wondered just who needs to be made aware of adoption during “our” month. Certainly not adopted people who lost the right to our birth certificates decades ago and are now treated like ungrateful brats when we demand the return of our obcs. Certainly Continue Reading →

NATIONAL ADOPTION AWARENESS MONTH RESOLUTION: SURPRISE! WE’RE NOT IN IT

Howdy Doody! Here is Barack Obama’s official National Adoption Awareness Month Resolution. I’m posting the whole thing here so you don’t have to run over to the Federal Register. Bastardette especially likes this part: By continually opening up the doors to adoption, and supporting full equality in adoption laws for all American families, we allow more children to find the permanent homes they yearn for and deserve.Of course, this is a sop to the GLBT community who Obama so unceremoniously dumped in Maine yesterday, and will no doubt continue to dump. It sure ain’t about bastard equality. Even though obc access is not a federal issue, we’re not even on the radar. In America, thousands of young people are waiting for that opportunity. During National Adoption Month, we honor those families that have strengthened America through adoption, and we recommit to reducing Continue Reading →

ADOPTION.COM: YOUR UNPLANNED PREGNANCY OPTIONS

Just got the adoption.com National Adoption Awareness Month newsletter which includes: Your Unplanned Pregnancy: You Have Options. We wonder what those options might be since the article is written under the aegis of National Adoption Awareness Month, is sponsored by Bethany Christian Services, doesn’t mention abortion or keeping, and is followed by a group listing of squeaky smiling multi-cultural paps on the prowl. Thanks to all for the bronchitis tips! I’m feeling much better, and am making a public vow to post a blog each day, no matter how stupid, for our celebratory month.

NATIONAL ADOPTION AWARENESS MONTH RAMP-UP

National Adoption Awareness Month will soon be upon us. We can hardly wait for mainstream media to gag their cotton candy down our throats. Our not-favorite adoption site, adoption.com, has jump-started the party with a big spread. We are particularly intrigued by The National Adoption Month Activities Calendar and its nifty suggestions on how to celebrate this fun-filled month with our families. Did you know, for instance, that National Adoption Month is a swell time to cook a meal for your family? (November 1). I didn’t. That on November 16 you should prepare a meal that reflects your child’s heritage? My friend Rocco suggested a possum and squirrel casserole–stringy but elegant. I was thinking more along the lines of ramen noodles and hot dogs. Whatever menu is chosen, though, it must be prepared on a hotplate to remind your little adoptees what they escaped via God and your bank account. Or how about renting an adoption themed movie? (November 20) I like that. I suggest Natural Enemy or Orphan. Our classic movie fans may enjoy The Bad Seed or Penny Serenade Thanksgiving is for sending thank you notes to those who made your celebration possible: You know, like your adoption Continue Reading →

NATIONAL ADOPTION AWARENESS MONTH: LAWYER ROTTENTAIL–A SONG

Here it is more than half-way through National Adoption Awareness Month and Bastardette hasn’t even commented on this exciting celebration we hold dear to our hearts. I mean, how many other politically deprived classes get their own government sponsored month where they are told how lucky they to be disenfranchised? Only us bastards. And as a bonus we get a scolding (Bastardette, Nov. 20) from adoption hack Aaron Brivan! (Would African Americans be lectured by Strom Thurmond during Black History Month?–Oh never mind!) The other day on BEST (the Bastard Nation list) we were discussing the erasure of “us” from “our” month when resident Bastard theologian Fr. Jack Sweely wrote: > I saw a commercial last night for a new series to start soon on the> Hallmark Channel. From what I gather it will highlight the warm fuzzies of> adoption one story per week compete with the gurgling Gerber Baby and amom> who “felt” her non-pregnancy pregnancy as she waited for “God’s gift.” My> guess is this series will be about as close to representing the reality of> adoption as is the Easter Bunnie representing Easter. Now, not to mix holidays (or is that metaphors?), but resident bmom poet and Continue Reading →
