NAAM Day 1: Welcome to the Worst Month of the Year: November 2024. National Adoption Awareness Month

Celebrating bastards, exposing ridiculing, and cringing National Adoption Awareness Month 2024:

It seems like only yesterday that we put this baby to bed, and already it’s National Adoption Awareness Month (NAAM) again.  In the past, I’ve included the additional/redundant name National Adoption Month (NAM), but I’ve pretty much scrapped that one. Whatever it’s called, it’s that very special month when the adoption industry cranks its noisemakers and marches its brass band across the country to share the good news of family displacement, identity erasure, and kicking adopted people to the curb.

What all this means, though, is that I will blog every day this month about our most unfavorite subject.  I have done this for over 10 years, and it’s a killer. On the brighter side, though, I am also blogging for National  Blog Posting Month (Cheer Peppers Division) (NanoPoblano2024), which coincides with November’s NAAM  and is definitely not related to adoption.

I never know what I will write about until I sit down to do it. I know that this time around I will write my first serious piece (I think) on the dead newborn left in the Idaho Safe Haven Baby Box.  She did not die in the box; in fact, she was dead for several hours or even days, but there are a lot of questions that only we most serious cranks are asking–especially about the embargo on release of information to the public and who controls the gate.

I’ll write more about the unexpected passing of Bastard Goddess and Bastard Nation vice president, Mari Tatlow Steed. I will also be putting up a memorial page for her. (Go to the link above right above here for information about her memorial service on November 9, 2024)

If I can squeeze in the time, I’ll try to finish 2 new books, Adoption Memoirs: Inside Stories by Marianne Novy and The Price of Children: Stolen Lives in a Land Without Choice. I know both authors personally and they are very bastard and Bastard Nation friendly.  If I don’t get them read and reviewed in time, I recommend them anyway–right now! I’ll also try to get something together on what to expect with legislation next year–but it’s important to see how the coming election goes. (Hint:  we could be sunk).

And of course, there is always news. Every day some new adoption horror story hits our screens. And movies and TV. I will try to update some webpages that have been neglected and post about them.

If y’all have any subjects you’d like me to cover let me know. Maybe I can do it, maybe I can’t. Since I returned from Chicago in August with Covid (or something) along with an attack of sciatica, I’ve suffered from some kind of sleeping sickness, or at best inertia, that knocks me out out-of-nowhere rendering me far behind in my work.  Or maybe it’s Adoption Burnout. I feel vaguely excited, though, about getting some work done this month out of NAAM/NanoPoblano necessity. I refuse to be a blogging deadbeat.

I will publish my blog on the Daily Bastardette each day, and will also post them, when appropriate, on the Bastard Nation or Stop Safe Haven Baby Boxes websites
