Intercountry adoption is a topic of debate in the US. Most adoption reformers don’t like it or want to at least clean it up, the US State Department monitors it, and sending countries have clamped down on it. Only the adoption industry and would-be adopters hold on.
Intercountry adoption numbers to the US, have plummeted in recent years due to several factors including the refusal of a growing number of countries to send their children to the US due to corrupt, coercive, and illegal child acquisition practices used by US adoption agency child catchers and their brokers, and the number of internationally adopted children who have been abused and killed–many by their Christian forever adoptive parents. Now comes Joel Webbon, one of God’s chosen, founder/president of the White Christian Nationalist Right Response Ministries and senior pastor at Covenant Bible Church, both located in Georgetown,Texas. He’s a real doll. He believes that women should be banned from voting. To put a “quick end ” to the #MeToo Movement he wants to execute women who lie about sexual assault. On a personal note he told the Atlanta Black Star that he “oversees every aspect of his household, including determining when his children can use the bathroom.” Oh, I nearly forgot: only Protestants can hold full US citizenship.
You can imagine what he thinks about immigration. Neither he nor God like it.
On November 13, a video was posted on the church website, and Twitter (I cannot embed it, but here is the Twitter link) where he said
“for the next 20 to 25 years there should be virtually zero immigration, and I’m not talking about illegal, I’m talking about legal.
That, of course, would kill legal intercountry adoption. But that’s not all.
He’s come up with a nifty Christian way to stop “illegal migration” too. Kill parents.
Yes. He wants the US to shoot migrants approaching Trump’s “wall.” (apparently on the Mexican side) calling it a “more merciful option.” The murders of the few that get their heads blown off, which he calls “Biblical justice” would actually be an instrument of family preservation:
What will end up happening is you’ll have a handful of people that will get killed and then thousands of people that don’t experience the misery of coming and then having to be removed and families split up.
Otherwise, it’s kids in cages or disappeared altogether.
To be fair, we are pretty sure that Webbon likes adoption of the right kind of children. The right kind, of course, aren’t coming across the southern border, (they are already here) but are being “saved” from the aboritorium. Granted, Webbon’s declaration does not mention adoption (or sale) of the left-behinds. any more than he mentions legal intercountry trade. Adoption for Webbon isn’t even a second thought, but it’s the first thing I thought of when I read about his tirade in Newsweek.
Webbon’s idea, however, can be extrapolated to include a natural end to legal intercountry adoption and that of seized children from the Global South trapped at the border. Of course we want to end those forced adoptions, but we’re not to advocate murdering parents to do it. Nearly 1000 children, during the last round of Trump detainments, are “lost in the system,” many adopted or trafficked into sex and servitude rings. Neither legal or illegal scenarios will fly with child-hungry Christians who want to bring children to Jesus and think that the US and sending countries as well as individual states are too picky about who qualifies for adoptive parenthood. Some might even be members of Right Response or the Covenant Bible Church, I’d bet the bank that Webbon loves to drag little adoptees of the right sort to the altar and sanctify them. And I’d bet the same bank that detained children of wall-climbers, if they survive, would not fair well under Webbon’s looneytunes Protestant state.
What about those adoption agents who fly Asian, South American, and European women to the US to give birth to babies earmarked for upscale US citizens who can afford them and aren’t too particular about how they get them?
“Adoption is beautiful,” but Webbon’s eugenic plan for family preservation, if adopted, could pound another big fat nail in the legal and quasi-lllegal intercountry adoption coffin –but not in the way that those critical of the practice would likely approve.
I’d not put it past Trump to implement a policy of murdering people trying to cross the border, but I doubt even the lowest bottom feeder in his administration Stephen (Nosferatu ) Miller would claim it for family preservation
Bonus: While writing this I surfed around looking for anything Wobben says about adoption, to make this piece better. (It didn’t turn out as I planned) but I didn’t and got tired of looking. There are pages and pages, however, of links of pure Wobben Domionist assholery. out there. There’s got to be a rubber room with his name on it waiting for him. Here is one of my favorites where he complains about why he had to explain to his daughter why there is a woman at their neighborhood swimming pool wearing a sari. Would a thong be OK if the woman was a white Protestant? He’s got 3 daughters and 1 son. I hope they all grow up to be bad. At least one of them has to.
