Keeping this one short to be caught up with my 30 blogs this month
One of the great losses of my 7 years of various moves is the loss of my NCFA Factbook 3 otherwise known as The Adoption Mythbook. On whim I looked it up on Amazon tonight and found a used copy for only $5.00 and ordered it immediately. It won’t arrive until next week.
Factbook 3 is a historical document that I’m betting the current NCFA would like to bury. It is a stunning record of crackpottery married to adopteephobia and adoption secrets and lies (though it does have a handful of good essays.). IIt unintentionally lays out why we are still in the adoption quagmire and names name.
Dr Pierce pulled out all the stops. The book, a whopping 637 pages/1 pounder, was funded by various rightwing foundations and edited by a well-known religious loon who at some point worked with Paul Weyrich’s Free Congress Foundation. I can’t remember her name right now–and should. I will add it here when I get it. This is what I remember about her: At the reception after Bill’s memorial service, which I attended, she gave a little speech about how “Bill Pierce made me pregnant.” I am sure Bill’s wife Paula O’Connor appreciated that. As it turned out, said speaker years ago was trying to get pregnant and Bill prayed for her. Miraculously…you guessed it.
BN took a few hits in the book, which we laughed at. It was such phony outrage I think he called us “privacy breakers” or something like that. He huffed and buffed so bad along the way that I pictured a Birkenstock-wearing-BN-socialist-anarchist sneaking into his bathroom and pulling back the shower curtain. Ther was much ire about bmoms and plenty left over for the adoption industrialists he had run-ins with. It was his piece de resistance. His last hurrah. It took many years after his departure for NCFA to rebrand itself as normal. The funny thing is that after I got to know him, I was not sure that he believed everything he spewed. He was a theatre guy and unfortunately AdoptionLand was his stage.
Amazon reviews of Factbok 3 show exactly how awful it is. Here is a very short review that says it all:
The contents of this book is cruel, totally obscene and fiction. I can not believe that an organization would spread such lies and deception, poor and cruel advice.
and another from a woman that I think is on the BN FB page:
This book reveals the dark, evil, cruel nature of infant adoption in the United States. First, the adoption industry preys on vulnerable young moms, telling them, “We know that you LOVE your child. The most LOVING thing you can do for your child is to place him for adoption, so that he can have a better life.” Then, after the naive, loving mother falls for these lies and surrenders her beloved child, the baby-buyer tells her child that her natural mother “didn’t love her.”
NCFA 3 should be required reading for all current and future NCFA staff and board, As I wrote yesterday, I have no desire to open this war again, as long it stays out of bastard f business, but geez-o-peez NCFA newbies probably wonder why everyone hates them. And activists and new bastards need to know how ended up slogging through this muck.
