Nothing says National Adoption (Awareness) Month more than the current SHBB national juggernaut. We are just about halfway through this dreadful month, and seven new boxes have been opened–excuse me, blessed–so far. Another is scheduled to open this week. Who knows what’s in store for us for the rest of the month? Adoption is beautiful! Especially with no pesky parental strings, best practice, and ethics attached.
Here are the new boxes in order of appearance:
- #177:Rushville, Indiana
- #178: Greenville, Ohio
- #179: Moundsville, West Virginia
- #180: Bardstown, Kentucky
- #181: Carrollton, Kentucky
- #182: Falmouth, Kentucky
#183 is scheduled to open on Thursday, November 16, in Alamogordo, New Mexico.

And, the cherry on their hot fudge sundae is the passage of SB369 in Wisconsin which legalizes abandonment boxes there. The bill is on its way to the governor. Coincidently, SB15 the latest of several bills introduced in the Wisconsin legislature to restore the right of all Wisconsin-born adoptees to obtain their Original Birth Certificates has been sitting since January 27, 2023, in the same Committee on Mental Health, Substance Abuse Prevention, Children and Families that couldn’t wait to vote out the baby box bill.

We do have some good news, though. Reportedly, Michigan SB627 isn’t going anywhere, and even if it does, it’s DOA at the governor’s desk. According to SHBB Inc founder and CEO, Monica Kelsey, Governor Gretchen Witmer says she will not sign any baby box bill that comes to her desk. (Tumbler Tuesday, Facebook, November 14, 2023). I’ll try to get a verification of Witmer’s take on boxes. In 2018 a similar bill was vetoed by former Governor Rick Snyder. Earlier this year, Mrs. Kelsey referred to Gov Snyder as “a total douche” over the veto.
BTW Michigan adoptees are one step closer to restoration of the right to their OBCs. A clean bill passed on November 9, and it’s been sent to the Senate. Read about it here.
